Rabat – Morocco’s weather office expects snowfall to extend to other provinces, as well as rainfall that will hit several regions across the country this week.
A new weather alert said today that snow of between 5 and 30 centimeters will fall on elevations above 1,700 meters, along with heavy rainfall between 20 and 30 millimeters.
Thunderstorms and hail will also hit some provinces, the weather directorate reported.
Snow between 15 and 30 centimeters will concern the provinces of Azilal, Beni Mellal, Midelt, Tinghir, Ouarzazate and Al Haouz from Monday at 12 p.m. to Tuesday at 7 a.m.
Snowfall of 5 to 10 centimeters is expected during the same period in the provinces of Ifrane, Boulemane, Taroudant, and Chichaoua.
Heavy rainfall between 20 and 30 millimeters, thunderstorms and hail are expected in the provinces of Figuig, Errachidia, Midelt, and Tinghir starting from 12 a.m on Tuesday.
Morocco has been expressing concerns about the lack of rainfall and limited water reserves in Moroccan dams.
Minister of Agriculture Ahmed El Bouari recently said the water in Morocco’s dams does not exceed 4.6 billion cubic meters, with a filling rate of 28%.
The situation prompted Morocco’s decision to cancel the Eid Al Adha sacrifice ritual due to a remarkable decrease in the country’s livestock.
The weather directorate shared a similar weather alert forecasting snowfall between 5 and 15 centimeters, including Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Boulemane, and Taroudant.
Some of the provinces were affected by a devastating earthquake that hit the Al Haouz region in 2023, killing at least 3,000.
Many families were left homeless and took refuge in tents pending the reconstruction work of their houses.
Video online shows heavy snowfall blanketing the tents of the Al Haouz affected population recently, with concerns mounting urging the government to take swift actions to assist those in need.
