Doha – Morocco participated Tuesday in the extraordinary Arab League Summit held in Cairo, with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita representing King Mohammed VI at the high-level meeting to discuss developments in the Palestinian issue.

The summit, which convened at the request of Palestine, aims to address the latest developments in the Palestinian cause, particularly preventing displacement of Palestinians and formulating a unified Arab position amid ongoing regional challenges.

“The summit seeks to address the latest developments in the Palestinian issue, focusing on preventing the displacement of Palestinians and reaffirming a unified Arab stance,” according to a statement from the Egyptian government.

Discussions also covered efforts to rebuild Gaza, uphold the ongoing ceasefire, and pursue legal and international measures to protect Palestinian rights.

The Moroccan delegation includes Mohamed Ait Ouali, Morocco’s ambassador to Egypt and permanent representative to the Arab League, and Abdelali El Jahid, head of the Arab and Islamic Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On the sidelines of the summit, Bourita held bilateral meetings with several counterparts, including Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Libyan Foreign Affairs Minister Taher Al-Baour.

According to the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bourita and Abdelatty discussed the need to “strengthen bilateral relations between Morocco and Egypt, as well as key issues on the summit’s agenda.”

The emergency summit was convened after coordination between Egypt, the host country, and Bahrain, the current chair of the Arab League, following consultations with member states and the Arab League Secretariat.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa delivered opening remarks at the summit, which began around 4:00 p.m. local time.

Among the key issues discussed was a response to recent proposals regarding Gaza’s future. The Arab leaders examined alternatives to Donald Trump’s controversial Gaza plan that proposed American control over the Palestinian territory.

Arab countries and Palestinians roundly rejected the plan. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed it enthusiastically, stating that “the time has come to give Gaza residents the freedom to leave.”

The “Arab Conference” called on the summit to “take practical decisions and measures against the displacement operation, sufficient to protect the Palestinian people, end the siege on them, and contribute to the reconstruction of Gaza,” according to statements from the meeting.

Notably absent from the summit were the presidents of Algeria and Tunisia, who sent their foreign ministers instead.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced his absence two days before the summit, citing “irregularities and deficiencies that marred the preparatory process.” In addition, he claimed that a “limited and narrow group of Arab countries” had exclusively prepared the summit outcomes “without any coordination with the rest of the Arab countries.”

The Arab League ministers had a closed preparatory meeting on Monday ahead of the summit to finalize its agenda and expected outcomes.

Morocco has maintained consistent support for the Palestinian cause throughout the Israeli genocide in Gaza that has claimed over 60,000 lives.

The country wasted no effort in advocating for an immediate ceasefire and adherence to the peace process as viable solutions to the ongoing crisis, while also providing humanitarian support to the Palestinian people.
