Rabat – US airstrikes in Yemen have killed 53 people, mostly women and children, in the capital Sanaa as well as areas in Saada, Al Bayda and Radaa, according to reports. The attacks come amid escalating tensions between US forces and Houthi rebels in the Red Sea region.
The rebel group has launched multiple attacks on military and commercial ships in recent months, causing the US and its allies, particularly Israel, billions of dollars. They had halted their attacks after the ceasefire in January, but resumed to put pressure on Israel for invoking their inhumane aid blockade in Gaza. Houthi leader Abdel-Malik al-Houthi vows to continue targeting US maritime interests until Israel reverses course.
US President Donald Trump says that the attacks “will not be tolerated” and vowed to “use overwhelming lethal force until we have achieved our objective.”
Even amid the attacks, the Houthis have not been deterred from standing in solidarity with Gaza, vowing to “meet escalations with escalations.” The group claimed retaliation with an attempted strike on the USS Harry S. Truman, a US aircraft carrier in the Red Sea.
American officials dismissed the attack, stating that it did not come close to hitting the vessel. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth asserted in a statement that military operations would persist until the Houthis halt their attacks on international shipping and drones.
These attacks on Yemen, which also destroyed a cancer treatment facility, mark the largest US military operations in the region since Trump took office. Reports indicate that the US plans to continue these attacks for several weeks.
Meanwhile, Israel has sent a delegation to Cairo, Egypt, to negotiate the release of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. Simultaneously, Israel keeps targeting Gaza’s civilians and continues its terror campaign against journalists and aid workers, all while blocking essentials and electricity to the enclave.
Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that 29 Palestinians were killed in the past 24 hours at the hands of the Israeli Occupation Forces — 14 in new attacks and 15 bodies recovered from previous strikes. Additionally, 51 wounded individuals have been hospitalized.
