Doha – The San Siro stadium in Milan takes center stage tonight as Inter Milan host Bayern Munich in a high-stakes UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg, with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m. Moroccan time on Wednesday.
The match will be broadcast live on beIN Sports HD 2, TRT Spor HD, Paramount+, Sony Ten 2 HD and various other regional broadcasters around the world.
Inter hold the upper hand after securing a dramatic 2-1 victory in Munich last week, where Lautaro Martinez’s clinical first-half finish was briefly canceled out by Thomas Müller’s 85th-minute equalizer before Davide Frattesi struck the decisive blow just three minutes later.
The Nerazzurri have been a defensive fortress in this season’s Champions League campaign, conceding just three goals, making Bayern’s task of overturning the deficit even more challenging.
Vincent Kompany’s Bayern side arrive in Milan dealing with a significant injury crisis. The German giants will be without several key players, including Jamal Musiala due to a hamstring injury, Alphonso Davies with a knee problem, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer suffering from a calf issue, and Dayot Upamecano also sidelined with a knee injury.
The visitors received some positive news with Kingsley Coman and Aleksandar Pavlović returning to action in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund.
Inter’s injury concerns are comparatively lighter, though Simone Inzaghi will have to manage without Denzel Dumfries due to a thigh injury, Mehdi Taremi who is struggling with a groin problem, and Piotr Zieliński who remains out with a calf issue.
The Serie A leaders demonstrated their squad depth in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Cagliari, where Inzaghi rotated his lineup extensively, with only five players from the Munich triumph retaining their starting positions.
The tie presents an intriguing tactical battle, with Inter expected to field their tried-and-tested 3-5-2 formation featuring former Bayern players Yann Sommer in goal and Benjamin Pavard in defense.
Bayern will likely counter with a 4-2-3-1 setup, spearheaded by Harry Kane, who has already netted 10 goals in this season’s Champions League – the highest tally ever recorded by an English player in a single campaign.
History adds another layer of intrigue to this encounter. Bayern have won all four of their previous European away matches at the San Siro against Inter, including a 2-0 victory in their most recent visit during the 2022/23 group stage.
However, Inter have proven incredibly difficult to beat at home this season, with their only defeat at the San Siro coming against AC Milan back in September.
The stakes couldn’t be higher for both sides. The winner will advance to face Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals, with Bayern particularly motivated by the prospect of reaching the final scheduled to be played at their home stadium, the Allianz Arena.
Inter, meanwhile, are riding a 12-match unbeaten streak across all competitions and have historically progressed in 20 of the 21 European ties where they’ve won the first leg away from home.
Both managers remarked on the magnitude of the occasion. “This will be a very difficult match for us. We have to forget last week’s result, but not the performance. We will need a great game in terms of running, aggression and attitude,” stated Inzaghi.
Kompany remains confident in his team’s chances, noting, “We have to win one match, that’s our normal task. The belief is there, and we understand what’s required.”
Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich exemplified his team’s determination: “It’s not like we need a miracle. We only have to win one match. We should go into it with that mindset.”
The Germans can take encouragement from their attacking display in the first leg, where they registered 20 shots and dominated possession, suggesting they have the firepower to challenge Inter’s defensive resilience.
For 35-year-old Thomas Müller, who recently announced his departure from Bayern at the season’s end, tonight’s match presents an opportunity to equal Lionel Messi’s record of 163 Champions League appearances.
The veteran forward demonstrated his enduring value with his crucial goal in the first leg, and his experience could prove vital in what promises to be an intense European night at the San Siro.
