Rabat – Moroccan police have arrested a 63-year-old Norwegian man who was wanted by authorities in his country for tax fraud. The arrest took place in Casablanca on Thursday.
The suspect was stopped by officers from the city’s judicial police department. A check in the Interpol database showed that he was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by Norway’s national Interpol office in Oslo.
According to the first details of the investigation, the suspect is accused of stealing around 500 million Norwegian kroner from the Norwegian government.
The individual allegedly used fake invoices to claim refunds for value-added tax (VAT) on behalf of several private companies he owns.
The suspect has been placed under legal procedures to facilitate his extradition. Morocco’s INTERPOL office in Rabat has informed its Norwegian counterpart about the arrest.
This operation is part of Morocco’s efforts to strengthen international cooperation in the field of security and to track down people wanted in connection with serious cross-border crimes, concluded a statement from Moroccan police.
The country has repeatedly worked with global partners and international organizations, including Interpol, to help track down fugitives and facilitate the arrest and extradition of individuals wanted for serious crimes.
