Rabat – Canada’s Liberal Party, led by new Prime Minister Mark Carney, has won the most seats in the federal election and will stay in power. However, the party has not won enough seats for a majority government.
The Liberals are leading in 168 seats, just short of the 172 needed for a majority in the 343-seat House of Commons. Carney, who became prime minister in March after Justin Trudeau resigned, is expected to continue leading the country with a minority government.
The Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, will remain the official opposition. The party is set to win 144 seats, but Poilievre has suffered a major personal loss as he is projected to have lost his own seat in Carleton, Ontario. His defeat came after a strong campaign by Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy, who won with 51% of the vote.
The New Democratic Party (NDP) had a disappointing night. It is leading in only seven seats and its leader, Jagmeet Singh, also lost his seat. The party’s share of the national vote dropped by around 12% points compared to the last election, and it may lose its official party status in Parliament.
The Bloc Québécois is projected to win 23 seats, all in Quebec. The Green Party is leading in just one seat, and the NDP in one northern territory riding, Nunavut.
Carney’s Liberals did best in Ontario and Quebec, where they won a total of 112 seats. These two provinces are key battlegrounds, with nearly 60% of the country’s ridings. The Conservatives had strong results in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Carney focused much of his campaign on protecting Canada from new trade tariffs and threats made by US President Donald Trump. In his victory speech, Carney said Canada “will never” give in to US pressure.
“President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us,” he said. “That will never happen.”
Carney promised to defend Canadian sovereignty and strengthen the economy by investing in new homes, factories, and energy projects. He also said he wants to build stronger ties with Europe and other allies, not just rely on the US.
Despite winning the most seats, Carney will likely need support from other parties to pass laws. With the NDP weakened, it is unclear which party he will work with.
