Rabat – A gas leak at a cable factory in Kenitra caused dozens of workers to suffer from suffocation on Monday evening. The incident led to a major emergency response.
According to initial reports, around 140 workers, both men and women, were affected by the gas leak inside the factory. Many of them were rushed to Zemouri Hospital in Kenitra to receive urgent medical care.
The hospital was on high alert last night, with emergency rooms full of patients and many families gathering outside to check on their loved ones. Despite the dire situation, authorities have not reported any deaths.
The scene outside the hospital was tense, with people anxiously waiting for updates. Videos shared online showed families of said workers gathered outside the hospital.
Local authorities and security services have reportedly launched an urgent investigation to determine what caused the gas leak. So far, no official statements have been released.
Several local residents and social media users said this is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the cable factory, adding that gas leaks and worker suffocation have happened before but were not taken seriously.
“There are always complaints about the air quality inside these factories,” one woman said outside the hospital. “The safety rules are not respected, and no one listens until a disaster happens.”
Many social media users criticized what they see as a lack of proper safety regulations in the factories and accused the companies of neglecting workers’ basic rights. Others raised broader concerns about the poor working conditions that factory employees, especially women, face every day in Kenitra’s industrial zones.
