Wydad Casablanca have confirmed the departure of head coach Rhulani Mokwena by mutual agreement, just weeks before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup.

In a joint statement published on Tuesday, the Moroccan club described the decision as the result of “consultations characterised by mutual respect and understanding.” The South African coach and his technical staff leave with immediate effect.

Mokwena, who leaves Wydad following a disappointing campaign, thanked club president Hicham Aït Menna, the players and supporters.

“While I bid farewell to Wydad, I carry unforgettable memories of this great club which will always have a place in my heart,” he said. “I wish the team and the fans the very best for the upcoming season and the Club World Cup – they are making history and deserve glory.”

Short-lived tenure

Wydad appointed Mokwena in a bid to restore the club’s African might after a third-place finish in the 2023/24 Botola Pro. The club missed out on CAF competitions but will feature at the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup due to their Champions League title in 2022 and runner-up finish in 2023.

They have been drawn in Group 7 alongside Manchester City, Juventus, and Al Ain.

Mokwena had been granted a leave of absence in late April and did not oversee Wydad’s final matches of the domestic season.

Moroccan coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem led the team during that period and is expected to take charge at the Club World Cup, though his appointment has not yet been made official.

Mixed fan reaction

While Wydad commended Mokwena for his professionalism and commitment, the reaction on social media was divided. Some supporters voiced frustration with the results, suggesting the players failed to respond to his tactical approach.

One supporter commented: “Players with good manners but no football sense – they let him down.” Another remarked: “You acted like Guardiola, but the players got lost before they figured you out.”

What’s next

Wydad kick off their Club World Cup campaign on June 18, against Manchester City at Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, United States.

The club is expected to announce Benhachem’s permanent appointment in the coming days.
