Rabat – Morocco is expected to face continued hot weather this week as an early heatwave pushes temperatures well above normal for this time of year. The heat began in the last week of May and is affecting several regions across the country.

According to El Houssein Youaabed, head of communication and partnership at the General Directorate of Meteorology, the hot weather is expected to continue for the next three days in the eastern regions, the southeast, and the inland parts of the southern provinces.

However, northern and western areas are expected to see a drop in temperatures, with a return to normal seasonal levels, he told SNRT News.

Youaabed attributed the ongoing heat to the continued effect of a thermal low-pressure system in the south and southeast of the country. This system is pushing temperatures higher in those regions. Meanwhile, coastal areas remain under the influence of a high-pressure system that brings cooler sea breezes, helping to ease the heat.

In the coming days, the highest temperatures are expected to range between 36 and 42 degrees Celsius in the far southeast and parts of the eastern and southern desert provinces.

Temperatures are expected to range between 29 and 35 degrees in the plains west of the Atlas Mountains, the southeastern slopes, and the eastern region. Coastal areas and other parts of the country will see milder temperatures, ranging from 23 to 29 degrees.

Mountain areas, especially the Middle and High Atlas, along with the high eastern plateaus, are expected to see unstable weather with local rain showers. In addition, low and thick clouds are likely to form at night and in the morning, especially over the northern and central plains, the Mediterranean coast, and the northwest of the southern provinces.

The hot conditions will also be accompanied by strong local winds, especially in the eastern regions, central coast, and desert provinces. These winds may cause dust storms in some areas.

Starting Thursday, the hot to very hot weather is expected to continue across the inland plains, eastern areas, southeast, inland Souss region, and the southern provinces, with temperatures rising gradually until the weekend.
