Football is in shock. Diogo Jota, the beloved Liverpool and Portugal forward, has tragically died in a car accident in Spain at just 28 years old. The crash occurred early Thursday morning on the A-52 motorway near Sanabria, in the Zamora province.
Jota was travelling with his younger brother André, 26, when their vehicle veered off the road and caught fire. Both men perished in the blaze, which also set surrounding vegetation alight, according to Marca. Emergency services could do little.

Just ten days ago, Jota married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso. The couple have three young children, now left fatherless.
The timing couldn’t be crueller.
From Gondomar’s youth ranks to Liverpool’s front line, Jota’s rise was steady and relentless. After early spells at Paços de Ferreira and AtlĂ©tico Madrid, his breakout came at Wolves, where he dazzled under Nuno EspĂrito Santo. In 2020, Liverpool signed him for $55m, and he quickly became a fan favourite, scoring 65 goals in 182 games and lifting multiple domestic trophies, including the Premier League title.
Quick, clever, and clinical, Jota was a manager’s dream. He could lead the line or play wide, always delivering with tactical nous and lethal finishing.
Liverpool fans, teammates and rivals alike are reeling. Football has lost not just a talented forward, but a young father and newlywed with so much left to give.
