Marrakech – Mohamed Bouzoubaa has been unanimously elected president of the Association sportive du club MAS de Fès, succeeding Hicham Chakor, who resigned several weeks ago. The election took place during the club’s ordinary general assembly held on Sunday.
Under the current structure, Omar Benniss retains his position as president of the sports company that owns 60% of the club’s shares, while the association holds the remaining 40%, in accordance with national professional football regulations.
The meeting announced the twelve members of the new executive board and reviewed the moral and financial reports for the 2024-2025 sports season, which outlined the club’s challenges and achievements.
The new board, however, expressed reservations – particularly over the annual MAD 3.5 million ($350,000) wage bill for the club’s school supervisors – calling for a thorough revision and audit.
Bouzoubaa, who is the CEO of construction company TGCC, which is listed on the Casablanca Stock Exchange, takes over at a critical time for one of Morocco’s most emblematic football clubs.
His election comes amid an acute crisis, marked by the resignation of former president Hicham Chakor on July 20, just hours before a sit-in organized by club supporters.
The new president’s arrival had been anticipated since June, when the MAS Association – supported by former leaders and emblematic figures of the club – officially endorsed his candidacy.
At that time, Bouzoubaa had already acquired 30% of the club’s shares, with the remaining ownership divided between Ismaïl Jamai (35%) and the MAS Association (35%).
Bouzoubaa’s election follows his recent high-profile meeting with Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema on Friday.
During that audience, discussions focused on priority projects in Gabon, including the construction of social housing, university hospitals, and modern medical and academic complexes, affirming TGCC’s expanding influence across Africa.
The assembly examined the list of new club members, comprising 43 new membership applications. It also decided to create a commission that will bring together certain personalities who have served the club.
A new page in the club’s history
Speaking on this occasion, the new president voiced gratitude for the trust placed in him by the club’s components. “The time has come to open a new page in the club’s history with everyone’s involvement, including the MAS supporters who accompany the club in all circumstances,” he stated.
Bouzoubaa vowed his determination, along with his board members, to work toward helping the club regain its glory days and its place among the elite football clubs at both national and continental levels. He also called for unity among all club components and to work for the interest of this emblematic club.
With a fortune estimated at $1.3 billion, Bouzoubaa’s arrival has generated enthusiasm among MAS supporters since March, when news first circulated that the construction tycoon might invest in the club.
As one of Morocco’s top five richest men, he has the financial capacity to inject substantial resources into MAS, transforming it into one of the wealthiest clubs in the country, potentially rivaling powerhouses like Wydad, Raja, and AS FAR.
The club has already shown signs of its new ambitions by signing a sponsorship deal with Daiko, a leading home appliance brand, and appointing Croatian-German coach Tomislav Stipic, who previously won titles with Latvian clubs Riga FC and FK Auda.
The assembly was attended by the president of the National Professional Football League (LNFP), Abdessalam Belkchour, the representative of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), and MAS members.
Bouzoubaa’s election opens a new chapter in the club’s management, raising hopes among supporters to see the club regain its prominence on the national football scene.
