Morocco’s home-based national team have reached the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) after beating DR Congo 3-1 in their final Group A match.
Oussama Lamlioui opened the scoring in the eighth minute after a well-worked move. DR Congo equalised through Japhti Kitambala two minutes before half-time following a defensive blunder.
In the second half, coach Tarik Sektioui brought on Khalid Baba, whose impact was immediate. He won a penalty that captain Rabie Hrimat converted in the 70th minute to restore Morocco’s lead. Lamlioui added his second and Morocco’s third ten minutes later.
Two further goals for Morocco in the closing stages were ruled out – one for offside and another after the ball had gone out of play.
The result leaves Morocco second in Group A with nine points, behind Kenya who top the group with ten after beating Zambia 1-0.
The Atlas Lions will now relocate to face hosts Tanzania next Friday, August 22, at 6:00 pm (GMT+1).
