Rabat — The updated death toll from Afghanistan’s devastating earthquake has climbed to 900 deaths and more than 3,000 injured, according to the government’s new updated data.

Yousaf Hammad, a spokesperson for Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority shared the new updated data, revealing the full scope of damage from the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck eastern provinces early this morning.

The government has formed a special committee to coordinate rescue and relief efforts.

The earthquake hit hardest in Kunar province, leaving dead and injured people across five districts: Nurgal, Chawkay, Watapur, Manogi, and Chapa Dara.

The tremor also killed 12 people and injured 255 others in the Daranoor district of neighboring Nangarhar province.

The disaster’s impact reached beyond the initial two provinces, resulting in 58 people sustaining injuries in the Alingar district of Laghman province, while four people suffered injuries in the Nurgram district of Nuristan province.

Striking at a depth of 10 kilometers, the midnight earthquake completely destroyed villages, leaving rescue teams racing against the clock to find survivors trapped under collapsed mud and stone buildings.

In response to the crisis, Afghanistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Hasan Akhund Kakar established a special committee to coordinate relief efforts. The Minister of Rehabilitation and Rural Development leads the committee, with representatives from various ministries and agencies participating in the response efforts.

As rescuers continue digging victims from under the rubble, helicopters continue flying the injured to hospitals.

Military rescue units have spread across the affected areas, conducting dozens of flights to transport injured and deceased people from remote locations.

“All our teams have mobilized to accelerate assistance so we can provide comprehensive and full support,” said Abdul Maten Qanee, spokesperson for Afghanistan’s interior ministry.

The government has also deployed teams to handle security, food distribution, and medical care.
