Morocco Votes for New York Declaration on Two-State Solution

UN General Assembly

Rabat – The UN General Assembly has approved a draft resolution that seeks to implement the two-state solution.

Morocco was among the 142 countries that voted today in favor of the New York Declaration calling for the establishment of an independent State of Palestine.

The North African country, which has long advocated for peace and dialogue to end the decades-long conflict, reaffirmed today its belief that the two-state solution remains the most viable option to end the situation.

Prior to today’s vote, Morocco reiterated in a statement on September 4 its commitment to the two-state solution during the Arab League Council. At today’s UN General Assembly meeting, Rabat reiterated its rejection of Israel’s “unacceptable measures.”

Renewing calls for an immediate ceasefire, Morocco welcomed the growing international momentum in favor of recognizing the State of Palestine. It also recalled the increased support for the two-state solution as the most rational and realistic option to preserve regional balance.

Ten countries, including Israel, Argentina, Hungary, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, the US, and Tonga, voted against the New York Declaration.

Meanwhile, 12 abstained from voting, including Czechia, Ethiopia, Fiji, South Sudan, as well as Albania.

This UN resolution comes following an international conference at the UN headquarters in July, which Saudi Arabia and France hosted to discuss venues of ending Israel’s decades-long war on Palestine.

Palestine welcomed the overwhelming international backing of the declaration, expressing gratitude to all countries that denounced the Gaza genocide and supported and voted in favor of the Palestinians’ right to an independent country.

In addition to calling for the implementation of the two-state solution, today’s resolution deplored the Israeli blockade that has caused starvation in Gaza and resulted in a “devastating humanitarian catastrophe and protection crisis.”

The resolution also condemned Hamas’ attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Hussein Al-Sheikh, Vice President of Palestine, welcomed the adoption of the draft resolution. This development reflects growing international support for the Palestinian cause, he stressed, arguing that the resolution constitutes an essential step toward ending Israeli occupation.

“The growing international recognition of the State of Palestine provides a key foundation for safeguarding the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and ensuring the two-state solution, strengthening regional and international security and stability,” he said.
