Rabat – At the UN summit today, French President Emmanuel Macron delivered one of the most consequential addresses of his tenure, declaring that France now officially recognizes the State of Palestine.
His remarks came amid the long ongoing bloody genocide waged by Israel against Palestinians, a campaign based on mass killings, relentless bombardment, and forced displacement.
“The time has come to free the hostages, the time has come to stop the war, massacres and the fleeing people,” Macron told world leaders.
“The time has come because there’s a pressing urgency everywhere. The time for peace has come. We are a few moments away from no longer being able to seize peace. And that’s why we’ve gathered here.”
Macron went further, saying that the recognition of Palestinian statehood is a moral and political imperative.
“This is the very reason today here, in this chamber, we must pave the way for peace. It falls on us, this responsibility, to do everything in our power to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution. Today, I declare that France recognizes the State of Palestine.”
Israel’s genocidal war has already killed tens of thousands, starved an entire people, and reduced Gaza to rubble.
Macron’s speech broke with decades of Western cowardice in the face of Israeli impunity, instead signaling a new European shift toward confronting Israel’s systematic destruction of Palestinian lives and rights.
Although France has long stood as a supporter of Israel, today’s recognition marked a striking departure from its past stance, noting the urgency of stopping the genocide and charting a path toward justice for Palestinians.
After years of empty promises and silence as Israeli bombs rained down on civilians, symbolic gestures can no longer suffice. The international community must act urgently, not only in words but in deeds, to end Israel’s ongoing genocide and enforce accountability.
As Israel continues to escalate its genocidal war on Gaza, many in the global community have said it is high time for other Western countries, long silent on the plight of Gazans or complicit in arming and shielding Israel, to join a much-needed global coalition against Israel’s escalating war on Palestine.
Yesterday, the UK, Canada, and Australia also formally recognized the State of Palestine.
The joint move delivers one of the most significant international blows yet to Israel’s bloody genocidal campaign against Palestinians.
