Rabat – The Judicial Police Department of Beni Mellal has launched an investigation, under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, into two police officers suspected of extortion and accepting bribes in exchange for failing to carry out their duties.
According to official sources, the suspects, one an officer and the other a police inspector, were arrested on Thursday following a complaint filed by two citizens.
One of the officers was apprehended in the act while allegedly committing these offenses.
The two men were placed in custody pending the outcome of a judicial inquiry ordered by the public prosecutor to determine the full scope of their involvement and uncover all circumstances surrounding the case.
At the administrative level, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) announced that the two employees had been suspended from duty in line with regulations governing National Security staff.
The measure, DGSN said, shows its commitment to upholding integrity and accountability within the police force.
Morocco slipped further in Transparency International’s 2024 Corruption Perception Index (CPI), falling to 99th place out of 180 countries with a score of 37 out of 100.
The result marks a one-point drop from last year and depicts the country’s continued regression in curbing corruption. Once ranked 73rd globally with a score of 43 in 2018, Morocco has lost 26 positions in just six years.
Despite adopting frameworks aimed at strengthening integrity and promoting transparency, the country continues to lack effective combating of corruption.
