Rabat – Bernardo Lopez, an 11-year-old boy, has become a topic of discussion in Brazilian media after recently joining the Botafogo football academy. His story is one of remarkable resilience that reflects the power of will and belief in dreams.
Bernardo comes from the Santa Isabel neighborhood in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro. At just one year old, he nearly lost his life after boiling water spilled on him, causing severe burns that required seven months of treatment, surgeries, and skin grafts.
Although doctors lost hope in his survival, Bernardo defied the odds and overcame his painful ordeal, according to media reports.
“We didn’t know if he’d survive, but he kept fighting. Football gave him strength.” Bernardo’s father said.
His passion for football never faded. He played in the streets and local tournaments supported by his uncle Rodrigo, who runs a social project for underprivileged children. Eventually, his father enrolled him in the CT Menino de Ouro football school.
“I always told him not to give up. Football was his escape, and I knew it could be his future,” Bernardo’s uncle Rodrigo said.
Bernardo’s life changed at Nilton Santos Stadium – Botafogo’s home ground – where he impressed during a youth tournament. He was invited to official trials for the club’s academy and passed with flying colors.
Today, Bernardo wears the jersey of his dream team and lives a story that truly embodies human will and the belief in achieving one’s goals.
