Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Health said it has completed its internal investigations into the deaths of women at a public hospital in Agadir, and has forwarded its report to the public prosecutor’s office.
The ministry also announced that it has placed the responsible staff under precautionary suspension until judicial and administrative inquiries conclude.
The Ministry emphasized that it is closely following the case, pledging transparency and respect for the rights of all parties. It reaffirmed its commitment to improving the quality of care in public hospitals under its broader health system reform.
The current crisis stems from a wave of maternal deaths at the Hassan II Regional Hospital in Agadir. At least eight women reportedly died in the maternity ward within one week following cesarean operations, under circumstances families and activists call “questionable.”
These tragic incidents triggered strong public anger. Dozens of citizens and civil society groups held protests in front of the hospital demanding justice and better conditions. They chanted slogans condemning corruption and the poor state of public health services.
The Agadir deaths and the hospital protests became a flashpoint. They fueled broader discontent among Moroccan youth, who have joined GenZ212, a decentralized protest movement demanding sweeping reforms in health, education, accountability, and governance.
On the streets of Rabat and other cities, protesters have called for the dissolution of parliament, an end to systemic corruption, and reforms in education and health. Slogans include “freedom, dignity, social justice” and “where are the hospitals while stadiums get built?”
The Gen Z212 protests began in late September 2025, and they are still continuing across Morocco.
These protests reflect deep frustration over youth unemployment, limited social mobility, lack of trust in institutions, and perceived priorities that favor sporting or prestige projects over basic public services.
