Marrakech – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed that she and senior members of her government have been reported to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for complicity in genocide, in relation to Israel’s ongoing massacres in Gaza.
In an interview with state broadcaster RAI, Meloni acknowledged that Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani have also been denounced, along with Roberto Cingolani, head of the Italian weapons manufacturing giant Leonardo.
“I don’t believe there is another case like this in the world or in history,” Meloni remarked, admitting the unprecedented nature of the complaint.
The filing – dated October 1 and signed by about 50 lawyers, professors, and public figures – accuses the Italian government of aiding genocide by supplying arms to Israel.
The complaint asserts that Italy’s support, particularly in the form of weapons and military cooperation, has made Rome complicit in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide against the Palestinian people.
“By supporting the Israeli occupation government, particularly through the supply of lethal weapons, the Italian government has become complicit in the ongoing genocide and the extremely serious war crimes committed against the Palestinian people,” the complaint reads.
The Palestinian advocacy group leading the filing is urging the ICC to consider opening a formal investigation into Meloni and her ministers for complicity in genocide, noting Italy’s role in weapons transfers as Gaza is bombarded daily.
Italian complicity strengthens IOF war machine
Mass protests have erupted across Italy in recent weeks, with hundreds of thousands taking to the streets to denounce Israel’s genocide and their own government’s role in enabling it.
Dockworkers threatened strike action against weapons shipments destined for the IOF (Israeli Occupation Forces), while students and trade unions have marched through Rome, Milan, and Naples. Demonstrators carried placards with Meloni’s face under the words “Accomplice to genocide.”
Italy’s right-wing administration, historically a staunch backer of Israel, has attempted to distance itself from the IOF’s most visible atrocities, calling its onslaught “disproportionate.” Yet Rome has refused to sever commercial or diplomatic ties, nor has it recognized the State of Palestine – even as entire neighborhoods in Gaza are annihilated and hunger spreads across the Strip.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Italy was one of only three countries that exported major arms to Israel between 2020 and 2024.
Italian shipments included naval artillery and light helicopters, while Leonardo continued maintenance contracts with the IOF. Italy is also part of the US-led consortium producing F-35 fighter jet parts, despite concerns that these aircraft are used to commit war crimes.
While Meloni insists no new arms supplies were authorized after October 7, 2023, critics note that existing contracts have been honored and deliveries continued under her government. Amnesty International, UN experts, and Palestinian advocacy groups argue that such transfers make Italy directly complicit in the IOF’s campaign of mass killings.
The complaint also denounces Italy’s failure to protect the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian fleet that carried aid to Gaza before being violently intercepted by the IOF in international waters. Nearly 500 international activists were detained, with six crew members still held in Israeli prisons.
Two years of relentless massacres in Gaza
Yesterday marked two years since Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza began, and the Palestinian death toll has climbed to at least 67,000 people, according to health officials. Independent experts believe the real figure could be closer to 200,000.
The overwhelming majority of the victims are women and children, murdered in IOF airstrikes or left to die under the rubble and in famine-stricken hospitals.
Entire districts in Gaza have been flattened, food is scarce, and clean water is nearly impossible to find. The IOF continues to starve the population as a weapon of war, despite binding orders from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) calling for an end to genocidal policies.
The ICC already holds arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over war crimes and crimes against humanity, including starvation, persecution, and mass killings.
However, neither has yet been charged with genocide – despite multiple UN bodies, genocide scholars, and human rights experts reaching the conclusion that Israel is indeed committing genocide.
The Italian case adds to a growing number of legal efforts worldwide aimed at holding state leaders accountable for enabling Israel’s crimes.
In Germany, France, and other countries, lawyers and rights groups have also launched proceedings against governments and arms manufacturers complicit in arming the IOF.
In Italy, the group Giuristi e Avvocati per la Palestina (Jurists and Lawyers for Palestine) has been established precisely to pursue such accountability.
With thousands of citizen endorsements, the group argues that by failing to cut ties, halting aid to UNRWA, and continuing arms contracts, Meloni’s government has chosen to fuel genocide rather than stop it.
Palestine calls for justice and accountability
Palestinians and solidarity movements stress that accountability cannot wait. “Italy has so far completely abstained from taking any preventive measures to stop the genocide, and has instead stubbornly continued to fuel it,” the lawyers behind the ICC complaint concluded.
For Palestinians under bombardment, this case is not symbolic – it is a matter of survival. Every weapons shipment and every political cover provided to Israel translates into more massacres, more children killed, more families erased.
As Meloni attempts to dismiss the charges as “unprecedented,” Palestinians remind the world that what is truly unprecedented is the scale of destruction inflicted by the IOF on Gaza: a genocide carried out live before the eyes of the international community.
The complaint against Italy’s leaders stands as part of a broader struggle to end impunity for Israel and its allies. For Palestinians, justice means not only holding Netanyahu and the IOF accountable, but also every government that armed, financed, and politically shielded them in their genocidal war.
