Rabat — Authorities at Morocco’s Tangier Med port thwarted a major drug smuggling operation early Monday morning.
The operation led to seizing thousands of prescription narcotic pills hidden in a small truck entering from outside the country.
Through tight coordination between customs agents and national security personnel, 9,000 pills of Rivotril – a potent sedative – were discovered in a carefully concealed locked bag within the vehicle.
Authorities arrested the truck driver immediately after the discovery.
The successful bust represents the latest in ongoing efforts by port officials to prevent drug trafficking attempts across Morocco’s borders.
These operations aim to protect public health and safeguard communities from dangerous narcotics.
The suspect has been placed under the public prosecutor’s office custody for further investigation.
Authorities plan to dig deeper into the case to uncover possible connections to larger smuggling networks both inside and outside Morocco.
The seizure demonstrates the dedication of Morocco’s customs and security personnel to combat drug trafficking at one of Africa’s busiest ports.
Morocco has been intensifying efforts to combat drug trafficking and human trafficking across its borders.
The North African country has foiled, in the last year, a shocking 92,346 drug-trafficking-related cases, arresting 119,692 individuals – including 287 foreigners – and seizing 123 tons and 971 kilograms of cannabis in several operations.
