Rabat – Frenkie de Jong has signed a new contract with Barcelona, extending his stay until 2029. His previous deal was set to expire next summer, which would have allowed him to negotiate with other clubs starting in January.
Talks over the extension took longer than expected, partly because De Jong changed agents earlier this year.
The new agreement includes a reduced base salary. His last contract – signed during the COVID-19 pandemic – had deferred payments that increased over time.
As those payments grew, Barcelona considered selling him to Manchester United in 2022 to cut costs. Despite that, De Jong consistently expressed his desire to remain at the club.
De Jong expressed his happiness during the signing, “I’m very happy to continue at the club I love. I’ve always wanted to stay here, and now it’s official.”
The Dutch international joined Barça from Ajax in 2019 for €75 million. Now in his seventh season, he has made over 250 appearances and played under five different managers.
The 28-year-old has won six trophies, including two LaLiga titles. Over the years, he’s grown from a young talent into one of the team’s senior figures.
His midfield partnership with Pedri is expected to be central to Hansi Flick’s plans moving forward. The new deal signals both stability for the player and a strategic move by the club to manage wages while keeping key players.
