Rabat – Police in the Moroccan city of Settat arrested a 43-year-old man early on Friday on suspicion of killing his wife and mutilating her body.
The suspect, who has a criminal record, was taken into custody following an investigation led by the regional police department.
According to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), police in the nearby city of Ben Ahmed had opened an investigation in May after receiving a report about a woman who had gone missing under mysterious circumstances.
Police investigations and field searches revealed that the missing woman had been violently attacked and killed by her husband inside their home. The suspect then allegedly dismembered her body using a power saw and disposed of the remains in an open area near Ben Ahmed.
A police search conducted with the support of forensic and technical experts led to the discovery of human remains and clothing believed to belong to the victim. Officers also seized several knives, a large electric saw, plastic containers, and a car suspected of being used to transport the victim’s body parts.
The remains have been sent to the forensic laboratory for DNA and other scientific tests to confirm the victim’s identity. Meanwhile, the suspect has been placed in police custody under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office, which is overseeing the investigation.
Authorities are continuing their efforts to uncover all the circumstances and motives behind this horrific crime, DGSN concluded.
