Colombia U20 grabbed the third spot at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup by downing France U20 1 – 0 at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile.

Colombia U20 and France U20 faced each other in the third-place match after both teams lost in the semi-finals. Colombia lost to Argentina and France lost to Morocco. This meant they were competing for bronze at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile. Everything began perfectly for the South Americans as they went on to secure a 1–0 victory.

Colombia took the lead in the second minute when Óscar Perea sent one flying with a precise left-foot shot from right in the centre of the box, with a good delivery from Royner Beníte to put him onto the ball.

The early goal set things in motion from there and Colombia effectively had control of the first half for the most part. By halftime Colombia had fired three shots, 2 of which were on target. France had 3 attempts too but they weren’t accurate enough and not one of them made it on target.

Score remained unchanged in the second half

The French U20s tried to get back in it in the second half by increasing the tempo and the pressure – but to little effect. Colombia just kept their cool and ticked along. At the 84th minute, France was after a potential penalty, the Somalia referee checked and said no. Then they made a second appeal at the very end of the game, but once again the referee looked at the video and decided not to give the penalty, leaving the score the same.

That early goal Colombia turned out to be make the difference and they managed to hang on to that coveted third spot. The match showed how very solid Colombia are at the back, while France showed flashes of brilliance but ultimately just couldn’t transform the chances that came their way despite doing a lot of the pressing in the second half.
