Mohammedia – According to an update on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Service Health Dashboard, the company confirmed increased error rates and latencies affecting several of its services in the region. According to the update, engineers are working to restore normal operations.
The disruptions started early on today and immediately disrupted a number of popular platforms that depend on AWS infrastructure. According to Reuters, Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans were all affected and reported connection problems throughout the outage.
Multiple global platforms affected
Social media and messaging services also faced problems. Snapchat users said they couldn’t connect, while Signal confirmed that its platform was also affected.Â
“PSA: we are aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by,” said Meredith Whittaker, the President of Signal, on X.
Perplexity, an AI startup, said it was temporarily, blaming the AWS outage. “Perplexity is down right now. The root cause is an AWS issue. We’re working on resolving it,” said CEO Aravind Srinivas on X.
Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and trading app Robinhood both reported interruptions linked to AWS, while payment services including Venmo and Chime also faced issues, according to outage tracker Downdetector.
Amazon’s own services, such as its shopping site, Prime Video, and Alexa, were also affected. Thousands of people across the US said they had problems. Downdetector data showed large spikes in reports during the early hours of the incident.
Lyft, a ride-hailing service, was also affected, with thousands of users unable to use the app, especially in the US, according to The Guardian.
Reports of service outages went beyond North America. Many businesses and government agencies in the UK also faced disruptions. Local news and tracking sites reported that users of Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Vodafone, and BT Group had trouble accessing online services.
Smart-home systems linked to Amazon devices, such as Ring doorbells, were temporarily unavailable for some users, as reported by The Guardian.
AWS confirmed that the problem only affected the US-East-1 region, which is one of the company’s busiest data centers and serves a large number of its global customers.
Recovery efforts underway
In the afternoon, AWS claimed that they were working on recovery and that service availability was slowly improving. The company noted on its status page, “We are actively working on multiple parallel paths to resolve the issue.”
Business Insider reported that by late morning in the US, there were fewer new outage reports, suggesting that some services were being restored.
Amazon and AWS did not issue additional public statements beyond the official status updates. No details were immediately available on the cause of the disruption or the total number of customers affected.
