Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Health announced the launch of 49 new urban and rural health centers across nine regions.
According to the ministry, the launch of the new health centers took place today under King Mohammed VI’s high directives aimed at “completing the reform of the national health system.”
The announcement comes at a time when Moroccan youth have been staging consistent protests across the country. The demonstrations have been calling for an urgent overhaul of the healthcare and education sectors.
The protests began in Agadir following the death of at least eight pregnant women in a local hospital due to complications from cesarean surgeries.
The unemployment rate — which reached at least 13.3% — and other socio-economic crises also sparked anger among citizens, seeking reforms.
The launch in detail
The ministry stated that the inauguration of the new structures is also part of the government’s “ongoing program to rehabilitate primary healthcare facilities” that include the reconstruction, modernization, and equipping of 1,400 health centers across all provinces.
The ministry deployed around 230 healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and technicians, to provide services to local populations.
By region, the Souss Massa region will benefit from six new health centers distributed among Taroudant (5), Tiznit (1), and Agadir-Ida-Outanane (1).
Rabat-Sale Kenitra has two new centers in Rabat. The ministry inaugurated two centers in the Draa-Tafilalt region, specifically in Tinguir. And in the Laayoune Sakia El Hamra region, a new dispensary has begun operations in Laayoune.
Eleven new urban and rural health centers have been distributed among Marrakech, Essaouira and Al Haouz. In Beni Mellal, Khenifra region, the ministry inaugurated three centers in Khenifra, one center in Beni Mellal, and one in Khouribga.
The ministry also announced the launch of eight new facilities in the Casablanca-Settat region, six in Nouaceur, one in Mohammedia, and one in Settat.
Ten centers opened in the Oriental region, including eight in Nador, one in Driouch, and one in Figuig-Bouarfa.
In the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, the ministry announced the expansion of the healthcare capacity with four centers, three in Al Hoceima, and one in Tangier-Assilah.
In his speech marking the opening of the parliament earlier this month, King Mohammed VI reiterated his long-standing calls for elite accountability and genuine public service.
He also urged vigilance in defending the nation’s interests and preserving citizens’ fundamental rights, calling on the government to tackle regional disparities.
Last week, King Mohammed VI chaired a ministerial council where he reviewed a draft law that allocates MAD 140 billion ($15 billion) for the health and education sectors in 2026 and provides for the creation of 27,000 new positions.
The healthcare budget seeks to support projects, including the inauguration of new University Hospital Centers in Agadir and Laayoune, the completion of the Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat, and continued construction in Beni Mellal, Guelmim, and Errachidia.
