Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) have qualified for the group stage of the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup after a 5–1 win over Ghana’s Asante Kotoko in the second leg of their second preliminary round tie on Friday, October 24, at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.
The aggregate score is 6-1 in favor of WAC after they won 1-0 in the first leg in Accra.
The match began with high tempo and Wydad took the lead in the first minute. Hamza Hannouri scored on the counter attack to make it 1-0. Asante Kotoko responded well and equalised in the 19th minute through Samba Gilbani to make it 1-1.
Wydad’s finishing that led to qualifying
Wydad regained the lead in the 26th minute when Aziz Ki converted a good move into a goal to make it 2-1. They continued to dominate in the second half. In the 54th minute Thembinkosi Lorch scored from the penalty spot to make it 3-1. Oussama Zemraoui scored another penalty in the 85th minute and Mohamed Bouchouari scored in stoppage time to make it 5-1.
Wydad showed their tactical awareness throughout the game, they had possession and controlled the tempo of the game. They exploited the spaces and executed their set pieces well. The team’s cohesion and strategy was the key to their two-leg dominance.
Now that the qualifying part is done, the next step is the group stage draw for the CAF Confederation Cup. It will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa on Monday, November 3. Wydad will be waiting to see who their opponents are and continue their journey towards continental glory.
