Rabat – Local authorities in Rabat have reportedly decided to rename Avenue Annakhil, one of the main streets in the upscale Hay Riad district, after US President Donald Trump, the news website Maghreb Intelligence reported today.
Sources cited by the outlet said the decision comes as a gesture of recognition for Trump’s role in advancing Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
The move follows the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which reaffirmed Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara and endorsed the autonomy plan as a viable framework for resolving the long-standing dispute.
The symbolic renaming reflects the enduring diplomatic resonance of Trump’s 2020 decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the region, a move that significantly reshaped relations between Rabat and Washington.
While Moroccan authorities have yet to make an official announcement regarding this decision, the reported move has already drawn interest and debate in Rabat. Avenue Annakhil serves as a major artery connecting several government buildings, embassies, and business centers in the Moroccan capital.
If confirmed, the change would mark one of the most visible tributes to a foreign leader by Morocco in recent years.
