Gambia reiterated on Wednesday in Rabat its steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, expressing strong approval of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which the country considers to further consolidate the Moroccan autonomy plan as the only basis for resolving the regional dispute.
During a joint press briefing with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Gambian Foreign Affairs Minister Sering Modou Njie said his country “welcomes the latest UN Security Council resolution” and described the autonomy initiative as “the only solution” to the Sahara issue.
He added that Gambia’s position has remained unchanged, emphasizing long-standing political alignment between the two countries on this question.
In this regard, Bourita said Gambia has consistently stood with Morocco, noting “the quality of the fraternal and solidarity-based relations between the two countries.”
The meeting also underscored the determination of both states to broaden bilateral cooperation. Bourita said Rabat is ready to intensify work with Banjul across multiple sectors, including stronger coordination through ministerial visits and the conclusion of new cooperation agreements.
He also noted Gambia’s constructive role in promoting regional security and stability, as well as its support for the Atlantic African States Process (AASP) and the Atlantic African Gas Pipeline.
The ministry said the talks reflected the quality of relations between the two countries, rooted in partnership and solidarity. It added that both sides wish to translate political goodwill into concrete programs that advance shared priorities.
For his part, Njie stressed Gambia’s desire to further strengthen cooperation with Morocco, calling the relationship “strong and outstanding” and expressing hope for deeper engagement in the years ahead.
Both ministers agreed on the importance of expanding collaboration not only bilaterally but also within regional and multilateral frameworks, particularly the African Union and the United Nations.
