Marrakech – Argentina honored Moroccan Ambassador Fares Yassir with the “Transformative Leadership in Latin America – 2025 Edition” award on Wednesday in Buenos Aires. The distinction recognizes Ambassador Yassir’s ethical values and diplomatic commitment in strengthening regional ties.

The award was jointly presented by Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies and the Chamber of Deputies of Santa Cruz Province. Twenty personalities from 13 Latin American countries received the honor during a solemn ceremony at the Congress headquarters.

The distinction aims to highlight individuals who have marked the Latin American space through their vision, commitment, and ethical values. Recipients are recognized for transforming social, institutional, or cultural realities across the region.

Organizers specifically honor women and men who have inspired innovation, citizen participation, and sustainable development. The award focuses on contributions to education, health, innovation, environment, public policies, and civic engagement.

According to organizers, Yassir’s recognition constitutes “a well-deserved tribute to an exemplary and transcendent trajectory.” His work has significantly strengthened Morocco-Argentina relations while promoting democratic culture and human development in the region.

His diplomatic action has been praised for its depth and positive impact. Organizers described his efforts as essential in improving ties between Latin American peoples and the Maghreb region.

The organizers noted Yassir’s role in consolidating interregional dialogue. They pointed to his promotion of bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Morocco and Latin American countries.

Yassir expressed feeling “honored and privileged” to receive the distinction. He noted the award represents homage to Morocco, which “honors this transformative leadership title through initiatives undertaken by the Kingdom in Central America and the Caribbean.”

The Moroccan ambassador views diplomats as “determining actors in transformation through their ideas and cooperation initiatives.” He believes diplomatic work directly or indirectly impacts societies in both host and home countries.

Morocco-Argentina relations date back to nineteen-sixty

Following the ceremony, numerous diplomats congratulated the Moroccan ambassador. Representatives from Arab, African, Asian, European, and Latin American regions attended the event.

The diplomatic corps hailed the distinction’s significance and recognized Rabat’s constructive role in strengthening interregional dialogue. They acknowledged the recognition and esteem enjoyed by Moroccan diplomatic action among diplomats accredited in Argentina.

The event honored several other Argentine and Latin American personalities from various backgrounds. Award recipients included provincial governors, mayors, university rectors, and prominent representatives from civil society, cultural circles, and media.

Morocco-Argentina diplomatic relations date back to 1960, three years after Argentina recognized Morocco’s independence in 1956. Argentina was among the first countries to recognize Moroccan independence.

The relationship has strengthened over the decades through various agreements. In 2000, both countries signed major trade, fisheries, and cooperation agreements in Rabat.

Argentina has consistently supported Morocco’s territorial integrity regarding Western Sahara. Former President Eduardo Duhalde renewed Buenos Aires’ backing in 2003, stating Argentina would not tolerate separatism or microscopic entities.

Economic ties have developed substantially between both nations. In 2016, Argentine exports to Morocco reached $368.7 million, while Moroccan exports to Argentina totaled $107.4 million.

Yassir has served as Morocco’s Ambassador to Argentina since June 25, 2019. His recent recognition reflects Morocco’s expanding diplomatic presence in Latin America and growing cooperation between both regions.
