Marrakech – Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has announced this Monday that Mohamed Ouahbi will take over the head coaching position on Morocco’s U-23 national team.
The announcement was made at the headquarters of the Faculty of Legal, Economic and Social Sciences of Rabat-Souissi during the opening ceremony of an international conference themed “Sport and Development in Africa: football as a socio-economic inclusion vector.”
During the ceremony, Lekjaa emphasized FRMF’s commitment to injecting new blood into Morocco’s youth national teams, as part of its strategy to develop Moroccan national teams.
After a bronze-medal run during the Paris 2024 Olympics under now head coach Tarik Sektioui, Lekjaa has set an even more ambitious objective for the 2028 Summer Olympics: bringing home the gold medal.
Ouahbi, fresh off leading Morocco to the U-20 World Cup in Chile, received several offers to provide his coaching services elsewhere, according to Hesport, but the FRMF insisted on retaining the Moroccan tactician.
Ouahbi’s appointment guarantees a continuity in the development of the U-20 World Champions. At the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, the newly-appointed head coach will be able to count on a majority of the U-20 World Cup winning roster. Players such as Othmane Maamma, Gessime Yassine, and Yassir Zabiri will all be eligible for participation.
