Rabat – Morocco’s public broadcaster Al Aoula has drawn attention with its coverage of the Africa Cup of Nations. Led by news director Yassine Idrissi, the channel delivered organized reporting, clear studio analysis, and solid technical support.
Viewers saw a more professional image of Moroccan public media during the tournament.
CAF, which manages accreditation for broadcasters through its official Media Channel, opened applications for AFCON 2025 in September and extended the deadline to October due to high demand.
Accredited outlets receive an official CAF letter, required for entry and registration on the Yalla application.
Reports indicate that Al Aoula received accreditation to cover AFCON, a role many expected would go to Arryadiya, Morocco’s dedicated sports channel. This decision has fueled debate about the positioning of national broadcasters.
In the build-up to the semi-finals and final, Al Aoula’s coverage stood out for its field presence and structured commentary.
The channel invested in analysis programs and technical production that focused on the sporting side rather than distractions. This approach was seen as a step forward in how Moroccan television covers major events.
At the same time, questions remain about who will commentate the final. Fans recall Abdelhaq Charrat, a veteran voice of Moroccan football.
His long career and emotional style left a mark, and some expect his possible return, though nothing is confirmed.
The situation also raises debate about Arryadiya, Morocco’s dedicated sports channel. It was expected to lead AFCON coverage, but Al Aoula has taken that role.
Arryadiya has faced criticism for weak commentary, outdated production, and lack of innovation. Many viewers turn to international broadcasters like beIN Sports for sharper analysis and modern presentation.
With Morocco preparing to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the shift shows a bigger issue: can Arryadiya modernize and meet global standards?
