Rabat – The Provincial Directorate of National Education, Preschool Education, and Sports in Essaouira announced the suspension of classes on Tuesday across all educational institutions in the province as a precautionary and exceptional measure due to poor weather conditions.
The directorate said in a statement that the decision was taken in response to weather alert bulletins issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology. The move aims to ensure the safety of students as well as teaching and administrative staff.
The same source explained that the suspension follows recommendations from the provincial vigilance cell and was made in full coordination with local authorities and all relevant stakeholders.
The provincial directorate also called on all concerned parties to remain cautious and to follow safety instructions during this period of unstable weather conditions.
The move comes after the devastating floods that wrecked the coastal city of Safi on Sunday, claiming the lives of at least 37 people and injuring dozens of others.
The directorate of education in Safi announced the suspension of classes for three days. Other cities followed suit and suspended classes until the weather became more stable.
Several provinces across Morocco saw heavy rain and snow in recent days, with authorities urging locals to exercise caution and follow weather alerts.
Videos shared online showed flash floods and cars submerged in water in several areas. Safi, in particular, bore the brunt, with unusually heavy rain causing flash floods that went above knee levels, and in some areas submerged entire ground floors, claiming the lives of many.
Morocco’s Road Safety Agency (NARSA) also called on all road users to exercise extreme caution and to delay non-essential travel until weather conditions improve. The agency warned that heavy rain, snow, and strong winds significantly increase the risk of traffic accidents.
