Rabat – A wall at a private school in Casablanca’s Oasis collapsed this morning following heavy rainfall. The collapse resulted in the death of a school’s security guard.
Converging reports said the collapse also caused injuries to a teacher, who sustained serious leg wounds.
Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances behind the collapse of the wall.
The city of Casablanca is part of the regions that have been witnessing heavy rainfall and strong winds.
On Monday, the Moroccan weather forecast forecasts heavy rainfall for the city as well as a series of regions. The office expects rainfall between 35 and 45 millimeters to affect several cities, including Casablanca, Nouaceur, Skhrat-Temara Sale, Tangier, and Assilah, as well as several other regions in North, the West, and central Morocco.
In response to the situation, education authorities in the Casablanca-Settat region, as well as in other provinces, announced the temporary suspension of classes at public and private schools across different municipalities due to adverse weather conditions.
The Casablanca Municipality also issued a series of preventive guidelines aimed at residential buildings equipped with underground parking facilities, and seeks to reduce the risk of flooding and damage to property.
The municipality urged residents, building managers, and syndicates to take all the necessary precautions, including cleaning and opening drains and rainwater channels within parking areas and their surroundings.
The guidelines came following devastating floods that killed at least 37 people in Safi.
