Rabat – The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has announced an increase in the prize money for the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) from $7 million to $10 million.

He said this decision is part of CAF’s strategy to improve the commercial value and competitiveness of African football competitions.

Motsepe made the announcement during a press conference held in Rabat on Saturday, organized on the sidelines of the Africa Cup of Nations finals, which will take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

“The country that wins the title in Morocco will receive 10 million dollars,” Motsepe said. “This is an important goal. Around the world, prize money is increasing, and we have also decided to raise the prizes for the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup. The new amounts will be announced after January 18, 2026.”

The CAF president also revealed plans to launch a new national teams competition called the “African Nations League.” According to Motsepe, the tournament will be held during the FIFA international window, between October and November, and will include top African players. The competition will be organized in partnership with FIFA.

In addition, Motsepe announced that CAF will grant one million dollars to each African football federation as part of its plan to support and develop football across the continent.

The Africa Cup of Nations will officially kick off in Morocco on Sunday with the final scheduled for January 18, 2026, as the country hosts one of the biggest football events in Africa.

Moroccan football officials promise an unprecedented AFCON.
