Rabat – FIFA released its latest monthly world rankings today, with Morocco ending the year in 11th place with 1,716.34 points.
Despite winning the Arab Cup in Qatar, the Moroccan national team did not earn enough points to break into the top 10 and finished just 0.54 points behind Croatia, which remained in 10th place.
With the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicking off last night in Rabat, attention now turns to the Atlas Lions’ performance and whether a strong run in the tournament could help them climb higher in the FIFA world rankings.
Morocco ended 2024 in the 14th position before climbing to the 12th spot in the April 2025 FIFA ranking. The Atlas Lions held on to that position in the July ranking, before rising to the 11th spot in September.
The Moroccan squad then dropped to the 12th position before returning to the 11th in November, a position they have maintained up to now.
Meanwhile, Spain continues to lead the FIFA ranking, followed by Argentina, France, and England, respectively.
Brazil and Portugal claimed the fifth and sixth spots, followed by the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.
Hopes are currently high for the Moroccan national team to put in a strong performance at the ongoing AFCON in front of their home crowd. The Atlas Lions took on Comoros in the opening game and earned themselves three points after a 2-0 victory.
Despite the win, the game was not an easy one for Morocco, as Comoros proved to be a strong opponent. The first half of the game, which ended in a deadlock, was particularly difficult for the Moroccan team who struggled to get through Comoros’s defense.
It wasn’t until the second half of the game that Brahim Diaz found the back of the net, which significantly boosted the team’s confidence and saw them create several scoring opportunities. Ayoub El Kaabi then scored Morocco’s second goal through a stunning bicycle kick.
Morocco will then take on Mali on Friday before locking horns with Zambia on Monday.
