Rabat – Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui stressed that his team must stay grounded despite their strong start at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025.
After Morocco’s 3–0 win over Zambia, which secured first place in Group A and qualification to the round of 16, Regragui reminded everyone that the real challenge begins now.
He explained that the tournament is always demanding, and that from this stage forward, every match should be treated as a final. “We cannot win the trophy alone,” he said, calling on the Moroccan people to act as the team’s “12th player.”
He pointed to Tunisia’s triumph in 2004, when home support helped them lift the cup, as an example of how crucial fans can be.
Regragui also cautioned against overconfidence. “We should not think the job is done. We still have work to do,” he noted. While pleased with the win, he admitted the performance was not perfect. “This was not our reference match.”
“Scoring early changes the rhythm, but we must be more clinical. We often create 15 or 16 chances but only face one or two shots against us. To be champions, we need sharper finishing.”
He stressed that efficiency in attack will decide who wins the tournament. “The team that makes the most of its chances will be the one to lift the trophy,” he said.
Regragui also welcomed criticism, saying it is part of the game. He believes fan confidence frees the players and makes them more effective. “We felt real support today, and that is why I cannot be upset with criticism. It is natural, and it pushes us forward.”
Looking ahead, he urged his squad to remain realistic and humble. “We are improving, but we must keep our feet on the ground. No arrogance, no excess enthusiasm, just focus and unity.”
