Morocco Faces Heavy Storms, Strong Winds in Multiple Provinces

Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics has called on all road users to be extremely careful while traveling this weekend, as unstable weather conditions are expected across several parts of the country.

The ministry said in a statement that the warning follows weather alerts issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology. These alerts forecast strong winds, heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially in mountainous areas, and snowfall in a number of provinces from Friday through the weekend.

Strong wind gusts are expected in several regions, including Al Haouz, Chichaoua, El Jadida, Safi, Sidi Bennour, Essaouira, Midelt, Azilal, Youssoufia, Figuig, Jerada, Oujda-Angad, Taourirt, Kalaat Sraghna, Marrakech, Rehamna, Agadir Ida-Outanane, and Taroudant.

Very heavy rainfall is also expected, particularly in high-altitude areas in Agadir Ida-Outanane, Taroudant, and Essaouira. Heavy rain may affect Safi, Sidi Bennour, El Jadida, Chtouka Ait Baha, Inzegane-Ait Melloul, Tiznit, Chichaoua, Al Haouz, and Youssoufia.

In addition, snowfall is forecast in areas above 1,600 meters, including Midelt, Tinghir, Azilal, Ouarzazate, Al Haouz, Taroudant, and Chichaoua.

The ministry urged citizens to postpone non-essential travel, especially in areas affected by these weather conditions. It also advised drivers, particularly those operating public transport buses, freight trucks, and school transport vehicles, to follow weather updates before and during travel and to check road conditions.

Such weather increases the risk of road accidents, it warned, asking drivers to strictly follow road safety rules, ensure their vehicles are in good technical condition, adjust speed to weather and road conditions, keep a safe distance between vehicles, and avoid sudden overtaking or risky maneuvers.

In addition, the statement advised extra caution in cases of poor visibility or when driving on wet or snow-covered roads.

The ministry concluded by warning road users to be very careful when crossing bridges and sensitive road sections, to respect road signs and instructions from authorities, and to avoid crossing flooded rivers or streams.
