Rabat – Local authorities in Essaouira have launched a full emergency response ahead of severe weather expected this weekend following a red-level weather alert issued by Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology.

The alert warns of very heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous sea conditions, particularly along the Atlantic coast and vulnerable areas of the province. Rainfall could reach 80 to 120 millimetres, especially in mountainous zones.

In response, the Provincial Emergency Committee, chaired by Governor Mohamed Rachid, held an urgent coordination meeting to assess risks and strengthen preventive measures. Authorities called for maximum vigilance and rapid field intervention to protect lives, property, and infrastructure, especially in rural areas.

Civil Protection services have raised their alert level to the maximum. Emergency teams are operating 24 hours a day, monitoring flood-prone areas, rivers, and low-lying zones, while updating maps of high-risk locations, according to authorities.

They are also intensifying awareness campaigns for residents in affected areas.

In addition, all fishing activities have been suspended at Essaouira Port, and sailing has been strictly banned due to violent winds and high waves exceeding five metres.

Wind speeds could reach 90 to over 105 kilometers per hour, according to maritime authorities. Special measures were taken to secure boats and prevent damage.

Public utility services have also reinforced their teams to prevent electricity outages, particularly in rural communities, and to ensure quick repairs if needed.

Authorities urged citizens to avoid risky areas, especially near rivers and the coastline, and to strictly follow safety instructions until weather conditions improve. Emergency and monitoring services will remain active throughout the alert period, according to authorities.

Several schools across Morocco, including in Tiznit and Chtouka Ait Baha, have suspended classes on Friday and Saturday because of unstable weather conditions.

In addition, the Ministry of Transportation has warned road users against unnecessary travel and urged them to be cautious when driving.
