Rabat—Algeria and Nigeria are about to face off in a huge quarter-final match at AFCON 2025. This is a classic, long-standing rivalry, and the winner will get one step closer to winning the whole tournament.

The winner of today’s match between Algeria and Nigeria will advance to face Morocco in the AFCON 2025 semi-finals, as the Atlas Lions have already secured their place in the final four.

Algeria is coming into this game having won all four of their matches so far. Nigeria has also had a flawless start, absolutely powering into the quarter-finals after a dominant win in the last round, establishing themselves as the best attacking team in the competition.

This will be the 10th meeting between Algeria and Nigeria at the AFCON finals and their first-ever encounter for a quarter-final. It’s their sixth knockout meeting overall, following previous clashes in two finals, two semi-finals, and a third-place play-off.

Algeria hold a slight edge in AFCON meetings, with four wins to Nigeria’s three, alongside two draws. Their shared history at the AFCON is seriously rich and defining. Nigeria actually beat Algeria 3–0 in the 1980 final to win their very first title. Algeria got their revenge a decade later, winning the 1990 final on home turf.

More recently, everyone remembers the 2019 semi-final where Algeria edged out Nigeria thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Riyad Mahrez.

Algeria Team News

Algeria has been one of the most consistent teams at AFCON 2025, winning all four matches — a perfect start they’ve only managed before during their title wins in 1990 and 2019.

They’ve scored eight goals so far (third best in the tournament) and managed three clean sheets. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been a standout star defensively, putting himself on the brink of matching a national record for shutouts.

Riyad Mahrez continues to lead the charge with his experience, and Aïssa Mandi has been hugely influential at the back. The Desert Foxes are pushing to secure their seventh AFCON semi-final appearance and their second time doing so on Moroccan soil.

Nigeria Team News

The Super Eagles arrive full of confidence, fresh off a commanding 4–0 victory over Mozambique — the largest margin of win at this stage since 2019. Nigeria has secured four straight wins at AFCON 2025, scoring 12 goals total, which matches their all-time tournament record.

The partnership between Ademola Lookman (three goals, four assists) and Victor Osimhen (three goals) has been lethal, as they’ve combined for 11 of the team’s 12 goals. They also boast the competition’s best shot conversion rate and the most total shots taken.

The Super Eagles have an incredible track record at this stage of the competition, having progressed from 10 of their previous 11 AFCON quarter-finals. They are now seeking a fifth consecutive quarter-final win.

A win today would secure their 16th AFCON semi-final appearance.

  • Score Prediction: Algeria 1–2 Nigeria
