Rabat – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez strongly opposed the recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran, calling them reckless and warning that the conflict could trigger a major international crisis.
His remarks came after US President Donald Trump threatened to cut trade with Spain because Madrid refused to allow American aircraft to use its southern bases for operations against Tehran.
“We will not take part in actions that harm the world or contradict our values just to avoid pressure from others,” Sánchez said in a televised address.
He criticized leaders who use war to cover their domestic failures and urged caution, saying, “You cannot play Russian roulette with the destiny of millions.”
Sánchez has openly criticized both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, insisting that governments must serve people, not pursue dangerous agendas abroad.
He said Spain’s stance is simple and firm: “No to the war.” Sanchez also noted that the position reflects careful judgment and called for solutions through diplomacy rather than military force.
The Spanish government’s refusal has created tensions with Washington and Israel. Madrid’s critics accused it of siding with oppressive regimes, while most European countries avoided direct criticism of the strikes.
Unlike Spain, countries such as Britain, France, and Greece have provided arms to Cyprus following a recent drone attack and authorized limited operations from their bases.
Sánchez also recalled the long-term effects of the Iraq war, including the rise of terrorism and energy instability, warning that the current escalation could produce similarly dangerous outcomes.
He urged the international community to think beyond immediate military gains and consider the broader consequences for global peace and security.
