Morocco was elected on Friday as vice-chair of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM), the governing body of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) under the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The country, represented by the National Food Safety Office (ONSSA), secured the position during the commission’s 20th session held in Rome from March 9 to 13.

Morocco’s Permanent Mission to the UN organizations in Rome said the election “reflects the kingdom’s international standing in the field of plant health and its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation aimed at protecting plant genetic resources, facilitating safe trade, and advancing global food security.”

The Commission on Phytosanitary Measures adopts international standards on plant health and promotes national capacity-building to ensure sustainable and resilient agricultural systems. It also coordinates cooperation among countries to prevent and combat the spread of pests affecting plants and plant products.

Morocco is set to assume the full presidency of the commission in 2027, according to the same source. The Permanent Mission described the upcoming chairmanship as “a further sign of international confidence in the kingdom’s leadership and its engagement in effective global governance on phytosanitary matters.”

Through this mandate, Morocco will continue working “in a spirit of partnership and consultation” to support the implementation of international standards and contribute to the protection of plant health worldwide.
