Police in Tangier Arrest Swedish National Subject to International Arrest Warrant

Rabat – Police in Tangier arrested a Swedish national on Monday who was wanted by international police for his alleged involvement in a case related to cross-border drug trafficking.

The suspect, who also faces attempted extortion charges, was arrested at Ibn Battuta Airport in Tangier.

He was internationally wanted under a Red Notice at the request of the National Central Bureau in Stockholm.

Police also seized a cannabis resin found in the suspect’s possession during search operations. They put the suspect in custody for further investigations to determine the circumstances and details of the case.

The suspect is also subject to extradition procedures. The National Central Bureau in Rabat, under the General Directorate of National Security, informed its counterpart in Sweden of the arrest as part of the extradition process.

The arrest is part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to crack down on drug trafficking and transnational crimes.

Recently, the North African country made major drug busts.

Last week, near the coastal city of Essaouira, Morocco seized 11 tonnes and 755 kilograms of cannabis meant to be a part of an international drug trafficking attempt.

A week earlier, Morocco also seized 3.9 kilograms of cannabis at Tanger Med Port.

In 2025, Moroccan police seized approximately 170 tonnes and 768 kilograms of cannabis and its derivatives in total, alongside more than 1.7 tonnes of cocaine and 5.9 kilograms of heroin.

Police handled 106,117 cases last year, arresting 134,126 individuals – including 378 foreigners.
