Gessime Yassine and Samir El Mourabet were at the heart of a historic night for RC Strasbourg last night as the French side beat Mainz 4-0 to complete a dramatic turnaround and reach the semifinals of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

After losing 2-0 in the first leg in Germany, Strasbourg produced a complete response at the Stade de la Meinau, overturning the tie with a 4-2 aggregate victory.

Both Moroccan internationals played a role in a match that will be remembered in Strasbourg’s European history.

El Mourabet started in midfield and was one of the driving forces of the team’s intensity and control. He helped set the tempo in midfield and played a major role in sustaining pressure throughout the match, despite receiving a yellow card in the 49th minute.

Yassine on the other hand, came off the bench in the final stages (around the 77th minute) replacing Abdoul Ouattara. Even in limited minutes, he contributed to the closing moments of the qualification.

Strasbourg’s performance was a complete reversal of the first-leg result. The 4-0 win not only erased the deficit but also sealed the club’s first-ever European semi-final appearance.

The team’s intensity from the start left Mainz with little room to respond, as the French side controlled the match from early on and never let the advantage slip.

Rising influence of Morocco’s young talents

This performance adds to a strong recent run for both players under coach Gary O’Neil.

Just weeks earlier, on April 4, El Mourabet delivered a standout performance in Ligue 1 against OGC Nice, scoring once and providing an assist in a 3-1 win. Yassine also impressed in that match with his dribbling and ability to win duels.

Their rise has been steady throughout the year, especially after both players earned their first senior international caps for Morocco during the March international break against Ecuador and Paraguay.

Yassine, who joined Strasbourg from Dunkerque in January, has quickly been labeled a new attacking weapon for the club, while El Mourabet is increasingly seen as one of the breakout midfielders of the season.

Strasbourg will now face Rayo Vallecano in the semi-finals, scheduled for April 30 and May 7.
