Casablanca – OpenAI hit a major snag today as several of its key services went dark for users around the world. The trouble began early on April 20 when the company first acknowledged a bug affecting ChatGPT Business accounts.

According to status reports, customers who tried to upgrade their plans or add new seats found themselves stuck for up to an hour, and OpenAI engineers managed to apply a mitigation for that specific billing issue. However, they spent the next several hours monitoring a slow recovery.

Just as that situation seemed to be stabilizing, a much larger problem erupted in the afternoon. The company started investigating a more severe outage that left people completely unable to load ChatGPT, the Codex programming tool, and the broader API platform. This wasn’t just a minor lag, as impacted users were totally cut off while the scale of the disruption grew quickly.

The company later confirmed a partial outage with 12 different components of ChatGPT and one component of Codex listed as affected. While specific tools like the Codex Web interface, CLI, and VS Code extension showed as operational, the Codex App itself was flagged with issues.

Internal metrics show that while aggregate availability is reported across all models, the experience for a developer or a casual chatter could vary wildly depending on what subscription tier they pay for or which specific API features they were trying to use at the time. Even newer projects like Sora and FedRAMP were listed on the dashboard as the company tracked the health of its entire ecosystem.

The situation finally stabilized by late Monday afternoon as OpenAI engineers applied a fix to the widespread loading failures. The company has moved into a monitoring phase for both the general access issues and the earlier ChatGPT Business seat-upgrade bugs.

While the system dashboard has finally turned green across major components like the Codex App and the main API platform, developers are keeping a close eye on their connections for any lingering lag. OpenAI has not yet disclosed a specific technical root cause for the loading failures.
