Former Nigeria international striker and Esperance Sportive de Tunis legend Michael Eneramo has died suddenly at the age of 40 after reportedly collapsing today during a friendly football match in Kaduna, Nigeria.

Eneramo, widely known as “The Tank” for his physical strength and powerful playing style, reportedly played the entire first half of a local friendly match without any visible sign of distress.

However, just five minutes into the second half, he suddenly collapsed on the pitch without any contact with another player.

According to early medical reports and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), the cause of death is believed to be cardiac arrest.

Despite immediate medical intervention on the field and rapid transfer to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The news triggered a lot of emotion across the football community in the continent and beyond. Dr Mohammed Sanusi, Secretary General of the NFF,described the loss as “devastating,” while Eneramo’s former clubs and federations quickly issued tributes.

Espérance Sportive de Tunis, where Eneramo became a club icon, paid tribute to one of their most influential foreign strikers, while Turkish sides including Beşiktaş and other clubs he represented also sent condolences.

The official Super Eagles account also posted a short tribute message: “Rest in peace, Michael.”

A legendary career in Tunisia and beyond

Eneramo remains best remembered for his hugely successful spell at Tunisian club Espérance de Tunis, where he scored 65 goals in total, including 51 in the Tunisian league between 2004 and 2010.

He played a huge role in multiple domestic title wins and became one of the most prolific foreign strikers in the club’s modern history, and a fan-favorite.

On the international stage, he earned 10 caps for Nigeria, scoring three goals, including a crucial strike against Tunisia during the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Eneramo later continued his career in Turkey, playing for clubs such as Beşiktaş, Sivasspor, and İstanbul Başakşehir, where he further built his reputation as a powerful and consistent forward.

Eneramo leaves behind a strong legacy in African club football, particularly in Tunisia, where he remains one of the most respected foreign players to have ever represented Espérance.

His sudden passing has left teammates, fans, and former clubs mourning a striker remembered for his strength, consistency, and impact across multiple leagues.
