Rabat – Germany has reaffirmed support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a basis to achieve a final and mutually acceptable solution for Western Sahara.
Johann Wadephul conveyed his country’s position during a joint declaration adopted at the end of the second session of the Morocco-Germany Multilateral Strategic Dialogue held today in Rabat.
The German official held talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, with the joint declaration welcoming UN Security Council Resolution 2797 of October 2025, which endorses Morocco’s Autonomy Plan to achieve a just and mutually acceptable resolution of the dispute.
“In this context, Germany welcomed Morocco’s willingness to engage in good faith with all parties concerned to clarify the arrangements under this autonomy plan, which Germany regards as a serious and credible basis for negotiations, and explain what shape autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty would take,” the declaration said.
During the meeting, the two ministers also discussed cooperation, including in security, emphasizing their determination to strengthen military, armament, and defense cooperation.
Both also aim to continue working towards an agreement between Morocco and Germany on the elimination of visa requirements for service passports.
Discussion also focused on international affairs, emphasizing the importance of active and constructive cooperation to maintain stability, security, and peace in different regions, including the Sahel.
Germany also commended Morocco’s active and constructive role and its contribution under King Mohammed VI’s leadership to peace and stability in the region.
Morocco, for Germany, is a key partner of the EU, NATO, and Germany, the declaration added.
Bourita and his German counterpart also discussed the developments in the Middle East, urging all involved to fully respect the ceasefire across the region and to cease military operations to fully ensure freedom of navigation as well as free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
With regards to the Palestinian cause, both ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to a negotiated two-state solution, with a democratic, independent, and viable Palestine living side by side in peace and security with Israel.
Germany commended Morocco’s role in Morocco in the Middle East, particularly King Mohammed VI’s engagement as the chairman of the Al Quds Committee, the statement concluded.
