Casablanca — As the United Kingdom’s local elections on May 7 draw closer, members of Labour Friends of Morocco are stepping up their campaigns, calling on Moroccan voters across London to support their candidacies under the banner of the Labour Party.

The group, made up of Labour politicians and members, is positioning this moment as a push for stronger political representation. It aims to deepen ties between the UK and Morocco while strengthening engagement with the British Moroccan community.

Candidates affiliated with the group are running in areas including Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea, where Moroccan communities have been established for generations. In these neighborhoods, many residents are active in local businesses, schools, and the NHS, forming what candidates describe as one of the largest Moroccan communities in the country.

As the elections approach, candidates such as Iman Less, Councillor Hamza Taouzzale, Lina El Baz, and Mohammed Radwan, Councillor Aicha Less, are urging greater civic participation. They argue that engagement in both local and national politics is essential if the community wants its voice to carry more weight.

Their campaigns focus on local concerns. Youth programs, public safety, and community investment are at the center of their platforms. Candidates say they have supported increased funding for youth clubs and backed the installation of more than 100 CCTV cameras across their borough to improve safety.

Beyond local issues, Labour Friends of Morocco is also framing its role within a broader diplomatic context. Joe Powell, Labour MP for Kensington and Bayswater and chair of the group, points to a recent partnership agreement between the UK and Morocco. The deal includes recognition of Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal for Western Sahara and aims to expand cooperation in trade, tourism, and investment.

The group says it wants to amplify Morocco-UK interests within British political institutions, while encouraging closer economic and cultural ties between the two countries.
