Meknes – Real Madrid has confirmed on Monday that Ferland Mendy suffered a serious leg injury during Sunday’s match against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium.

The French defender had to leave the field only 10 minutes into the game. His painful reaction at the time suggested the injury was significant.

Medical tests now show that Mendy has damaged the rectus femoris tendon in his right leg. This type of injury is serious and often requires a long recovery time.

The club stated that their medical team will monitor his progress closely, but he is expected to be out of action for the immediate future.

“Following tests carried out today on our player Ferland Mendy by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a tendon injury in the rectus femoris of his right leg. Awaiting progress.” The club announced on their website.

Mendy is expected to miss the rest of the season as another major blow for the defender, marking his fifth injury of this season alone.

Real Madrid sources indicate that he will likely undergo surgery after consulting with specialists in the coming days, Marca reports.

If he moves forward with the operation, his recovery could take around five months, though an exact return date remains difficult to predict.

Real Madrid injury crisis

The Frenchman’s ongoing struggle shows a fitness crisis at Real Madrid, where 120 injuries over the last two seasons have left the club in a seemingly endless battle to keep its players on the pitch.

The 30-year-old has only managed to play nine matches this season, totaling just 448 minutes on the pitch. After an injury in Copa del Rey final, he was unavailable to Xabi Alonso until late November, when he finally returned for a Champions League game in Athens.

Injuries have repeatedly disrupted his progress, as he has performed well whenever he is healthy. A clear example was his impressive performance against Bayern Munich, where he successfully neutralized Michael Olise.

However, these constant fitness issues have disturbed a player who continues to show great form every time he manages to stay on the field.
