Olympique de Marseille announced on Thursday that Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd has been permitted to travel to Morocco to continue his recovery program. The move comes as the player enters a critical phase of his rehabilitation following surgery and subsequent complications that have sidelined him for the remainder of the club season.
In an official statement, the club clarified that the decision was made to allow Aguerd to work directly with his national team’s specialists. “Olympique de Marseille informs today that the club has taken the decision to authorize Nayef Aguerd… to travel as part of the continuation of his medical care,” the statement said. “Nayef Aguerd will join Morocco to pursue his rehabilitation protocol in collaboration with the medical staff of his national team.”

The injury
Aguerd’s injury struggles began in late 2025, stemming from persistent groin pain known as pubalgia. After playing through the discomfort for several weeks, the defender underwent surgery on March 12, 2026, to resolve what was described as a sports hernia and related pubic bone issues.
The recovery process hit a significant setback in mid-April when Marseille’s medical team discovered a pubic bone fracture and minor bone inflammation. Before the surgery, Aguerd had been suffering for months, attempting conservative treatments before the medical staff concluded that surgery had become unavoidable.
Marseille reiterated its commitment to the player’s health, stating the club “remains in close coordination with the various medical staff concerned and wishes a speedy recovery to all of its players.”
