Rabat – Zambia reaffirmed today its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.

Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, recalled his country’s support during talks held in Rabat with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

During the talks, Zambia also expressed support for the UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted in October last year, reaffirming that the genuine Autonomy Plan is the only serious, credible, and lasting basis for a political solution to the regional dispute.

Zambia also expressed support for the UN-led political process, describing the autonomy plan as a pragmatic and constructive basis for reaching a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution.

Zambia is among the countries that opened representation in southern provinces, adding a tangible diplomatic expression to its unwavering support for Morocco’s position.

The south-central African country inaugurated its embassy in Rabat and a general consulate in Laayoune in October 2020.

Zambia’s FM emphasized the importance of bilateral ties, thanking Morocco for its hospitality during the visit to their second home.

“In our conversations, we expressed satisfaction about the excellent levels of relations between our two countries, reaffirmed our commitment to further alleviate ties” under the leadership and vision of the two countries’ heads, the FM said.

He conveyed his country’s determination to strengthen ties in different fields with Morocco, including renewable energy, mining, minerals, hydrocarbons, health, education, and agriculture, among others.

“We underscored the importance of implementing the IDC OCP Africa MoU, which will boost agriculture connectivity, create jobs, and reinforce Zambia’s role in the fertilizer value chain,” the FM said.

OCP Africa and Zambia’s Industrial Development Corporation, also known as IDC, signed the memorandum of understanding in May 2025 to advance sustainable agriculture and to create over 1,000 jobs. The strategic framework also aims to explore new avenues for collaboration in advancing agricultural productivity and sustainability in Zambia.

It focuses on locally adapted solutions seeking to contribute to the country’s food security and socio-economic development through improving access to high-quality fertilizers and other agricultural inputs.

“Our friendship is growing and will continue to grow for the mutual benefit of all of us,” he concluded.
